History of
the Center
The Charles R. Drew Wellness Center, conveniently located
on Harden Street in the heart of the city, bears the name of the renowned
blood researcher Charles R. Drew who was also an accomplished athlete. Drew's
contributions to the quality of life of all people inspired Columbia residents
to name the first Drew Park in his honor in the early 1950's. American
Red Cross certified instructors coached the Drew Park Sharks, a competitive
swim team, from the 1950's until 2001.
The Charles R. Drew Wellness
Center is built on a foundation of fond memories. Memories of generations
who enjoyed Drew Park - home of Little League Baseball and the Drew Sharks
swim teams for over half a century.
Photographs and memorabilia from Drew Park and Drew Pool are on display
throughout the center to remind us of the joys of playing together, the
importance of learning how to compete honorably and the value of building
healthy bodies and strong communities.
"There have been many days when I wasn't sure we'd ever have
a convention center in Columbia or a convention hotel or whether we would
live to see Main Street drivable again, but there hasn't been a minute
of doubt whether or not the Drew Wellness Center would be built," said
Mayor Bob Coble. "As your Mayor since 1990, I cannot remember
a project in the City of Columbia that has received more enthusiastic support
and personal effort from E.W. Cromartie in his 22 years on City Council
than the Charles R. Drew Wellness Center."
Today, Columbia's Charles R. Drew Wellness Center is the new jewel in
the city - offering a competition size swimming pool, gymnasium, cardio
and weight equipment, and walking jogging track.
Members further benefit from an experienced team of personal trainers
to develop fitness plans and monitor progress.
All of these services and more are available to the public at reasonable
rates and flexible hours of operation.
Now, that the City of Columbia has taken steps to ensure that all citizens
have access to a center with exciting fitness programs and instruction...the
